As from Sunday 1 July 2007, it is illegal to smoke in enclosed public places, work places and public and work vehicles in England, in fact anywhere in the UK.
The new law ensures most of us will be able to work, socialise, relax, travel and shop in enclosed environments free from second hand smoke.
The Smokefree Surrey campaign is run by a partnership of all borough and district councils, the county council and the Primary Care Trust in Surrey. We want to support and help businesses, organisations and individuals in Surrey comply with this new legislation.
Second hand smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals in the form of particles and gases - some of these chemicals are dangerous poisons. Second hand smoke is bad for health. It is known to cause cancer as well as many other serious health problems. Just thirty minutes exposure is enough to reduce blood flow to the heart.
This website provides you with information about the legislation and lets you know how you can play an important part in maintaining a smokefree Surrey.
Businesses can download signage from this site. A series of leaflets has been produced for a variety of work, social and residential settings - see Businesses page to download leaflets. Alternatively, you may wish to contact the Surrey NHS Stop Smoking Service for free advice and support.
Members of the public who wish to report a breach of the new law should call 0800 587 1667 or contact their local district or borough council.
